WILDCATS ON THE MOVE!

Tamanawis Cultural Exchange Program

Tamanawis has just begun a new annual Cultural Exchange program with Shu-Zen Junior College of Medicine & Management in Taiwan. The exchange program will happen on a yearly basis with 4 Taiwanese students spending 3 weeks in Canada and then 4 Tamanawis students spending 3 weeks in Taiwan. The program is designed as an Educational/Cultural exchange with both students sharing their educational system as well as their cultural traditions and life style.

We currently have 4 students from Taiwan attending Tamanawis in the day time and sightseeing in the evenings and weekends. The students have been extremely busy both at school and in the community. They have been to Gastown, Whistler, Victoria, UBC, Granville Island, Fort Langley and Grouse Mountain just to name a few of their treks/activities. They have been equally busy at school, working on Art projects, Metalwork and Woodwork projects, making and painting traditional First Nations’ drums as well as cooking and taking Drumline classes. The students have bonded and become a part of our Tamanawis family and have been a real pleasure to get to know.  We are looking forward to travelling to Tawain in December. We wish our new friends (Kyra) Chin-Chi Hsieh, (Layla) Ya-Wen Cheng, (Michael) Ming-Yao Chang and (Johnson) An-Sheng Cheng safe Travels and we will see at Christmas in Taiwan.

The Tamanawis students travelling to Taiwan are: Arry P, Alicia C, Tavleen K, Gian S along with Mr. Paille who will be the Teacher chaperone.

More exciting International opportunities!

WILDCAT ACTIVITIES!

On October 23rd at 6:02 pm, scientists worldwide celebrated “Mole Day” that commemorates Avagadro’s Number 6.02 x 1023 , which is a unit of measure in Chemistry. At Tamanawis, 14 teams of students ranging from Grade 8-12 competed in an exciting escape-based challenge that tested their scientific knowledge. All teams were extremely focused, and raced to escape each challenge. Congratulations to the winners, “The Inner Light Family!”

Here is a reflection written by one of the participants:

“Mole Day is full of fun science-based challenges that students get to experience in a competitive atmosphere. The challenges were very unique filled with brain teasers, and scientific information through which we can increase our knowledge. We were able to utilize the information that we have learned from the previous years. Our first activity was using the dichotomous key to distinguish between the properties of the three given jelly beans in order to determine their names. Then we quickly proceeded to the next challenge which was deigned to test our math and algebra skills.

The most enjoyable activity was the final building challenge. In this activity we started by stabbing the balloons so that the air can escape the balloon. We thought that the straw would carry the balloon across the floor. We did not think before we started that we need a place for the straw to hang. So we still did not fix the problem, but we continued to stab the balloon and cut the balloon. We wasted a lot of balloons and straws in our try to achieve a successful design. However, we did manage to accomplish the right design when there were only 5 minutes left. The mole day challenge was very fun and I wish to do it again. But unfortunately, I can’t. It’s my last year. But I encourage everyone in Tamanawis to participate in mole day challenge to make wonderful memories of high school. “

Wildcats get a ‘Thrill’!

Wildcats CARE!

Global Awareness held their annual Halloween For Hunger Drive from October 22nd to November 2nd. We accumulated non-perishable food items and cash donations in our Block D classes, and with the support of Student Council through the senior movie/game night. The Surrey Food Bank lends a helping hand to those in need. On average, 250 families visit the food bank every day. With your help we made a huge impact in our community,  by successfully collecting 22 boxes of food and over $200. This year’s top three finalists were as follows: in third place was Ms. Yakubowski’s class with 42 items donated, in second place came Ms. Stobbs’s and Ms. Sidhu’s dance class with 173 items donated, and our top contributor was Ms. Goto’s band class with 293 items donated. The top contributors received a ribbon of recognition and the top three classes earned certificates of achievement. Thank you for your participation in our yearly campaign – the Food Bank appreciates our contributions for families in need!

Wildcats Adventure back in time . . .

On October 9 the first semester Social Studies 9 classes ventured to Fort Langley to learn about the fur trade, the involvement of the First Nations in the fur trade and the creation of the province of British Columbia.  The activities for the day encouraged students to explore a variety of period houses to gain information about the way people lived and worked in the Fort during the time.  There was also some drama involved as they re-enacted the creation of the Province of B.C.

As we left at the end of the day, the interpreters shared:  “We look forward to your school coming.  You have the best behaved and the most polite students!”  What a great, and well deserved, compliment to our 1st semester Grade 9 Social Studies Class.  THANK YOU!!

Student Council Presents . . .

Student Council hosted a Halloween Game Night followed by a movie night for the seniors.  Students collected items for the food bank and sales from the Wildcat Window also went to the food bank.  It was a great night with lots of fun and a few screams with the event raising over $250.00 for the Surrey Food Bank.  Halloween saw great spirit from both staff and students and there was a catwalk organized in the café for the students to show off their creative side.

Leadership students promote community spirit

Ravnoop B. and Aum V. had the opportunity to present on behalf of the Leadership Class to the Peace Arch White Rock Rotary.  During their presentation they spoke about all that we do at Tamanawis to help make our school and community a better place to live, work and play.  They also had the opportunity to see how so many people from the community are involved in service and how important it is to their lives and the lives of others.  The lunch end with the presentation of a donation to our Christmas Community Dinner.  The Peach Arch White Rock Rotary has been a key sponsor of the dinner for over 15 years and it is with their support and the support of so many others that we are able to give back to those in need.

FINE ARTS – Wildcats Express themselves!

The Tamanawis Drumline were given an amazing opportunity to perform at Rogers Arena at the Canucks vs. Avalanche Hockey Game on Nov. 2! It was an awesome experience being taken into the ;behind the scenes’ areas like the dressing rooms, and executive viewing room.

They performed pre-game, marching around the Concourse and then during the first intermission! You can check out video from both these performances on the Tamanawis Drumline YouTube page.

Our first Music Concert of the year named “Squeaks and Squawks” did not hold true to its title. Performances from all our ensembles had minimal squeaks and squawks, starting with the debut of our Grade 8 and Beginning bands and ending with our more experienced Senior Concert and Jazz Bands.  Wonderful performances by ALL!

Please mark December 13th down for our Winter Concert which will be bigger and better!

Art – A True Expression of One’s self . . .

Coffee House – Exposed!

The Fall Exposure Coffee House was a huge success this year! Students, staff, past grads, friends, and family came out to enjoy an evening celebrating the arts at Tamanawis. So many talented people came out to perform poetry, sing songs, play instruments, dance, and show short films.

There were also live artists working on projects and interacting with audience members throughout the evening. Priya D. and Sofiyyah T. did a great job as MCs. A big thank you to staff and all members of the Exposure Club who worked hard to make everything come together for such a beautiful evening.  If students have art or writing they would like to submit to the Exposure book, they can email it to exposure2019@gmail.com or they can bring it to Ms. Letourneau in room N206.  Keep posted for our Spring Coffee House in April (date TBA).

Curious Wildcats . . . WHO DONE IT?

Thanks to Jasmeen S., Jasmeet B., Rajneet K., Surpreet S., and Abdus T. . . another crime scene has been created at Tamanawis this October.  Whether is was a Law, Science, Career Education, or an English class, many teachers and students used the scene for creating stories, making inferences, analyzing, or other creative processes.
